Influential News - March 2010

Congratulations to the Geelong Football Club for their appointment in February of Diana Taylor to the Club's Board. Diana's appointment is an inspired decision and recognises the obvious foresight of the Geelong FC Board to acknowledge the value of diversity amongst its leaders.

Geelong Football Club President, Frank Costa, shares my personal view of appointing qualified members to contribute to the leadership of an organisation regardless of gender.

It is Frank's opinion that "qualified people regardless of gender should be appointed. I understand the wealth of experience women bring to board decisions for a club like Geelong".

"Diana stood out as a quality person. Combined with a background in law & management; a passion for Geelong FC; a heavy involvement in football as the first female president of a large local league; a VFL tribunal member and AFL foundation member she represented all the qualities of a strong candidate".

It is "most important to have a high level of suitably qualified professionals with the skills required to meet the challenge and strong collaboration amongst Board members to bring about unity. Almost 50% of our members are female, and boys coming into the AFL are often guided by their mothers, so having a female sitting at the Board room table makes sense".

Frank believes the appointment of Board members is a "matter of great importance to cover all aspects of the community, and commercial Board coverage. Females make up over 50% of the population and their point of view is of very, very strong value. Ladies in general are less likely to put themselves forward. Boards should look to make room for qualified people - gender is not the priority".

The Geelong FC has demonstrated the importance of 'searching' for qualified female representation rather than expecting women to come to them in the traditional way many men find their way onto Boards.
